The Birth of Milton Keynes
John A Taylor
In the early 1960s the government began to look into the possibility of creating new towns to address overcrowding in urban areas. One site under consideration was North Bucks, at the time underpopulated. Various schemes were contemplated, some of which excluded the existing towns of Bletchley and Wolverton.
The book describes the discussions and interventions of various councils and interest groups as the concept evolved from a new town of high density housing linked by a monorail system to something approaching the plan that came to fruition.
The new town was formally announced on January 23rd 1967 and this book will be published on that day 50 years later.

Bryan Dunleavy
This book tells the story of the creation of England’s first company railway town, almost 175 years ago. It describes the decisions which led to its location, the ad hoc planning which led to this new community and its growth and development in its first decade. The works, the housing, the shops and most of the amenities have since disappeared as a consequence of new development and the book is a valuable reconstruction of the early town from preserved documents and reports.
